♠meaning: They will go shopping on Argyle Street and when more

Vietnamese move in, the area will develop.

♠中文翻译：他们会来阿齐勒街购买东西，这个地区慢慢会发展起来。

2.Nearly all the area’s business pioneers were Vietnamese who pooled their

family’s money to gether or borrowed from friends. (Para.4)

♠meaning: Nearly all the people who started their business first in this area

were Vietnamese. They set up their business by collecting their

family’s money or by borrowing money from friends.

♠pioneer: n. [C] a person who does sth. first 先锋，先驱

e.g. She is one of the pioneers of the women’s liberation

movement.

e.g. The research group pioneers in gene therapy (基因疗法).

3.… and new businesses were springing up, the bad people had fewer and fewer

♠meaning:…and new businesses were set up quickly, the bad people had fewer and fewer empty buildings in which they could stay.

♠spring up: appear in a short time 迅速出现

e.g. Fast-food restaurants are springing up all over the town.

城市中的快餐店一个接一个地出现。

e.g. A strong wind seemed to have sprung up from nowhere.

4.And as the neighborhood began to come back to life, the police department sent

more police officers. (Para.4)

♠meaning: And as the area became alive again, the police department sent more police officers to keep order.

♠come back to life: become alive again 苏醒；恢复活力

e.g. With the doctors’ efforts, the little girl came back to life at

last.
