The Global Food Crisis——

The Global Food Crisis——

Challenge
After nearly three decades of fairly steady declines, global grain prices doubled from the late fall of 2007 until mid-2008. Few could have predicted this event, which was greatly exacerbated by isolationist policies in exporting countries and panic buying in importing ones. Input prices such as fertilizer and fuel went up twice as fast again as grain prices. Blindsided, clients turned to the Bank for urgent assistance. However, even more people were hungry worldwide in 2009 and 2010 than in 2008. Despite international price declines in 2009, falling incomes in poor countries from the global financial crisis turned the food price crisis into a broader food crisis. There is also a widespread consensus that food price volatility has increased. World grain prices soared 156 percent from December 2005 to June 2008, then declined 47 percent to June 2010, and then jumped again by 68 percent to February 2011, and have since remained close to that level. In 2008, sudden and strong staple food price increases eroded household purchasing power, reduced calorie intake and nutrition, and pushed more people into poverty and hunger, making it

)Governments should stop the use of biofuels (生物燃料) and lift bans on genetic modification (转基因)of crops, a green campaigning group has urged, in the face of a growing global food crisis that threatens the developing nations. The EU, the US and the UK are among countries that use biofuels compulsorily, usually mixed with petrol fuel, for road vehicles. But much of the biofuel used comes from food crops , including wheat, maize and so on. TheWorld Food Programme has warned that the rising prices of these food, which have been driven by a combination of the Covid pandemic, climate breakdown and the war in Ukraine, is generating a food crisis around the world. In the UK, the renewable transport Fuel Obligation requires about 10% of the fuels supplied by fossil fuel companies to be “sustainable”, which in effect means biofuels. However, the amount that can come from food crops is at 4% at most, and will be reduced further to 2% in 2032.A UK government spokesperson said: “biofuels, and other renewable fuels, will continue play an important part in helping to decarbonise transport and meet our climate goals. However, to help address the global food price crisis, we continue to promote waste-derived biofuels and are reducing the percentage of crop based biofuels that count towards supplier targets.”RePlanet says that although the original reason for biofuels was as a lower carbon alternative to fossil fuels, in fact, owing to the impact on food, the fertiliser and energy used to produce the grains and oils and the land converted to agriculture to produce biofuels, there is little carbon saving over fossil fuels.RePlanet also argues that rich countries should eat less meat to free up grain , and that prohibitions on the genetic modification of crops should be lifted to achieve higher yields .In another recommendation likely to be controversial, the report suggests that the EU’s organic targets should also be deserted in favour of conventional and intensive farming techniques for higher productivity. Karolina LisslöGylfe , the secretary general of RePlanet, said: “If Europe doesn’t look at finding evidence-based solutions, the outcome w ill be worse for the world’s poor, for the climate and for nature conservation. ”【课标词汇精讲】1.lift取消,撤销(规定或法律)The restrictions on water usage have been lifted now that the river levels are normal.

The Green Revolution allowed food production to enable, or keep pace with worldwide population growth. The Green Revolution has had major social and ecological impacts, making it a popular topic of study among sociologists. The term “Green Revolution” was first used in 1968 by former USAID director William Gaud, who noted the spread of the new technologies.
Green Revolution
Green Revolution (绿色革命)refers to the transformation of agriculture that began in 1945, largely due to the life work of Norman Borlaug. One significant factor in this revolution was the Mexican government’sural research station to develop more varieties of wheat that could be used to feed the rapidly growing population of the country.
Malthus has become widely known for his analysis according to which societal improvements result in population growth. The six editions of his Principles of Population, published from 1798 to 1826, observed that sooner or later population gets checked by famine, disease, and widespread mortality. He was writing against the popular view in 18th century Europe that saw society as improving, and in principle as perfectible. Malthus thought that the dangers of population growth would preclude endless progress towards a utopian society.

粮食危机英文作文Title: The Looming Global Food Crisis。

In recent years, the world has been facing an increasingly pressing issue: the looming threat of a global food crisis. This crisis stems from a combination of factors, including climate change, population growth, resource depletion, and socio-economic disparities. In this essay, we will delve into the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to mitigate this imminent crisis.First and foremost, climate change plays a pivotal role in exacerbating the global food crisis. Rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and extreme events such as droughts, floods, and hurricanes are disruptingagricultural production worldwide. These climatic disturbances lead to crop failures, reduced yields, and diminished food supplies, consequently driving up pricesand exacerbating food insecurity. Moreover, the world's population continues to burgeon, placing unprecedented strain on finite resources. As the global population surpasses 8 billion, the demand for food surges exponentially, outpacing the rate at whichagricultural productivity can increase. This population pressure intensifies competition for arable land, water, and energy, further compromising food security, particularly in regions already grappling with poverty and malnutrition.Furthermore, resource depletion poses a significant threat to food production. Strengthening governance frameworks, investing in rural infrastructure, and promoting fair trade practices can enhance food security, reduce vulnerability, and foster inclusive development globally. In conclusion, the global food crisis poses a formidable challenge that requires urgent and concertedaction at the local, national, and international levels. By addressing the underlying causes of food insecurity, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and fostering inclusive development, we can build a more resilient, equitable, and food-secure future for all. Time is of the essence, and only by working together can we overcome this existential threat and ensure the right to food for generations to come.。

Unit 9
