VI. Basic Procedure of E-C Translation: Initial illustration of E-C translation
1. Understand the contextualized meaning of the words, and on a word-by-word basis the phrases, clauses, and sentences in the original (and finally the text as a whole).
Aims of the Course:
To acquaint you with the main principles and criteria governing E-C translation practices. To equip you with some necessary theory and with the fundamental strategy and system of skills of dealing with translation. To introduce you to the common ground and differences between English and Chinese in making sentences. To help you develop clear-cut concepts of English syntax and English communicative rhetoric.

Intensive translation study and exercises stress the quality and efficiency of practice and exercises rather than quantity: It will be more profitable to go all out and translate only a few challenging sentences at a time with each of them adequately done rather than to translate a lengthy text without a single sentence presentable. A double criterion: The translated version should be both faithful to the substance of the original version and smooth to read in accordance with the language habits of Chinese, which bears on structure and style.
The translation history of China witnessed some high tides of translation activities, and now a new high tide of translation is gaining momentum in China.
