Translation: Two Foreign Poems

(assembled/translated by: alexcwlin; reviewed/edited by: Adam Lam)

Grasshopper and Cricket (John Keats)

The poetry of earth is never dead:

When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,

And hide in cooling trees,a voice will run

From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead;

That is the Grasshopper's—he takes the lead

In summer luxury,he has never done

With his delights; for when tired out with fun

He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed.

The poetry of earth is ceasing never:

On a lone winter evening, when the frost

Has wrought silence, from the stove there shrills

The Cricket's song,in warmth increasing ever,

And seems to one in drowsiness half lost,

The Grasshopper's among some grassy hills

Night (Sergey Yesenin)

River quietly flows into dreamland,

and sounds disappear from a gloomy forest.

Nightingales’ singing has died down,

and corncrakesno longer cheer.

Night has descended, and it’s silence everywhere.

I can hear stream water’s distinct chanting.

The brightly-shining moon showers its lights,

and dons everywhere with a silver dress.

Tens of thousands of silver stars are glittering in big river,

and silver waves are rippling in small streams.

Soaking-wet green grasses in meadowland,

are also shimmering with silver beams.

Night has descended, and it’s silence everywhere

Mother Nature is immersed in dreamland.

The brightlyshining moon showers its lights,

and dons everywhere with a silver dress.

(1)Source of English Translation

The English translated version “Grasshopper and Cricket” was obtained from the internet and is either the originals or a translated version.

(2)Night (Sergey Yesenin)

The English version of Night by Sergey Yesenin I found in the internet is very different from the Chinese version in the text as follows:

The tired day droops, slowly waning ,

The noisy waves are now tranquil.

The sun has set, the moon is sailing

Above the world, absorbed and still.

The valley listens to the babbles
