When I entered Berkeley, I hoped to earn a scholarship. Having been a Straight-A student, I believed I could 1 tough subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature given by Professor Jayne. I was extremely interested in the ideas he 2 in class.

1. 学习一门课程，修一门课程，习惯上都用take，如take a course/ class/ lesson，当然也可以take a suject。

2. 这里涉及的也是对于词本身的搭配，老师在课堂上所表达的观点思想，用present ideas。以老师做主语，动词用seek寻求，exchange交换，obtain获得，都不符合这里的含义。

3. 第一段讲我对自己信心满满，可第二段来个大转折，第一次考试后，意外地发现竟然只得了77分，所以是shocked非常吃惊，而worried担心，scared害怕，anxious焦急，都不符合人物心理感受。

4. 由于3和4两个空是在一个句子内的，所以必须连起来看，尤其这里考察的是连词问题，更要注意观察前后两个句子的逻辑关系，很容易发现，我之所以十分吃惊自己的成绩这么出乎意料的差，是因为我本身英语成绩是很好的，这里for表由于。

5. 我去找老师，有一番理论，不过老师的表现是，听完我的话，之后仍然... 这里，unchanged 是不改变，注意，主语是老师，老师自己当然不会改变了，难道你指望他是变形金刚或是超人吗？还是个主语的问题，如果主语改为成绩，或许可以成立吧。应该是他不为所动，unmoved不被打动。所以我们可以知道，了解词本身的内在属性，多么重要，用汉语的意思去直接套用理解，而不考虑英语词本身的用法性质，是不行的。

I decided to try harder, although I didn't know what that 6 because school had always been easy for me. I read the books more carefully, but got another 77. Again, I 7 with Professor Jayne. Again, he listened patiently but wouldn't change his 8 .

6. 本句重在理解句子内部的逻辑和含义，明白了就比较容易。我并不知道刻苦学习意味着什么，因为一直以来学习对我而言是很容易的。

7. 我再次遭遇77分，于是再次，去找老师，quarrel吵架？reason找原因？bargain讨价还价？chat闲聊？打分数又不是买菜，难道老师说给你个77分，你说给个95吧，老师说那82吧，你说90吧，老师说86成交，可能吗？虽然我不很理解为什么总得低分，但我的态度还不至于太恶劣或无赖，所以reason可以猜到应该是态度应该是比较温和理性的。reason with sb. 与某人讲道理,说服某人。

8. 老师听完之后，再次无动于衷，他没有改变他的... attitude态度？mind想法？plan计划？view观点。这里，attitude迷惑性最大，注意，这里探讨的还是分数能不能更改的事，而change one's mind是英语中一个比较常见的搭配，意为“改变一个人的想法或决定”，相对于态度，改分数的事更多是关于改变决定的。

9. 本段前两句是同一个句式的重复，再考一次，也就意味着再一次提高分数的机会，其他选项比较不着边际。

10. 这一次，我显然是拼了老命了，那么是真的第一次learn了解到啥叫“彻底”了，而不是accept接受。learn是个老词，作为了解的含义，很常见。

11. 但是这次还是没啥效果，当然是my effort did no good，努力貌似比较白费。

12. 11和12照例要连在一起看。努力都白瞎了，当然一切还跟原来一样了，言下之意，该77还77，八成是觉得这老师跟我有仇是吧。注意，如果是everything stayed the same as before，可以用半系动词stay，因为有stay the same 这个固定搭配。我在这里就是没仔细看，以为是填stay。仔细看，其实没有the same，只是要求填个单独的不及物动词，而我们常说everything goes well，一切都很顺利，这里是一切都像从前一样，用go就很合理了，足够了。

The last hurdle (障碍) was the final. No matter what 13 I got, it wouldn't cancel three C-pluses. I might as well kiss the 14 goodbye.

I stopped working hard. I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final, I even 15 myself to a movie. The next day I decided for once I'd have 16 with a test.
