i. What do you know about this course?
1.2 Sound & meaning
Two schools : The Naturalists & The Conventionalists The Naturalists argue that the origin of
language lies in onomatopoeia, that people began talking by creating iconic signs to imitate the sounds heard around them in nature. There is a natural connection between sound and meaning.
mixture of native words (which are mostly of Anglo-Saxon origin) and borrowed words (loan words).
The Conventionalists:
The Conventionalists hold that the relations between sound and meaning are conventional and arbitrary. Valid: meat (English), 肉 (Chinese); the same phonological forms → different meanings (sight, site, cite).
Word lexical item vocabulary Lexical item: a unit of vocabulary (dictionary). Vocabulary usually refers to a complete inventory of the words in a language, and the words and phrases used in the variants of a language, e.g. dialect, register, terminology.
Content words: large and open (noun, verb, adjective, adverb)
Functional words: closed set (pron, prep, conj, au. v, determiners, some adverb)

Lexicology: it deals with words and word-
forming morphemes, namely, with significant units. It follows that these elements must be investigated in their form and in their meaning. Lexicologically, a word is a combination of form (phonological) and meaning (lexical and grammatical), and a word acts as a structural unit of a sentence.
