Ralph Waldo Emerson
the American towering figure of his era, was responsible for bringing Transcendentalism to New England, and he was recognized throughout his life as the leader of the movement. Emerson was born in Boston, the son of a Unitarian minister who died when Emerson was eight years old. He attended Harvard, studied theology, and became a Unitarian minister himself in 1829. At Concord that Emerson wrote his first book, Nature (1836).
