Industry Introduction
The “consumer electronics” (CE) category of p roducts includes smartphones, computers, televisions, video game consoles, automotive technology, and many other home products as well as emerging product categories such as wearables and 3D printers. It is a rapidly changing, dynamic industry that is highly competitive and influenced by technological developments. Manufacturers are under enormous pressure to bring unique and differentiated products to market. Any successful product quickly attracts copycat products from competitors, resulting in rapid commoditization and falling prices.
The global consumer electronics market contracted from 2011 to 2013 and has performed poorly in recent years in most regions throughout the world. In general, consumer electronics are deemed as a non-essential item. However, the market has had some form of redemption from a strong performance from countries such as China and India. With the economy turning the corner, the consumer electronics market will recover at a moderate rate. New concepts and products will be the main driver, along with the eventual recovery of the more mature economies.
Industry figures
A Slowdown in Global CE Market
The global consumer electronics market had total revenues of $253.9bn in 2013, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.8% between 2009 and 2013.
Consumer electronics sales in 2010 rebounded well and showed little ill-effects from the global economic downturn from the previous year. The industry was led by strong sales growth within tablets, E-readers, OLED TVs and smartphones, amongst others.
Differentiated Regional Sales
The Eastern European markets showed particularly strong growth in comparison to Western Europe which showed strong decline over the same period.
Within the developing markets, Latin America will enjoy the highest growth, driven by a burgeoning middle class. A large proportion of low income consumers are still not present in the market and constitute a large potential consumer base.
Asia Pacific is the largest consumer electronics market, with growth primarily driven by China and India. The region also has the largest youth population, and working adults hungry for electronic gadgets. Western Europe and the US will continue to be hampered by economic depression and flagging consumer confidence.
