NEWDELHI: Are your children talking to you? It doesn’t seem so.

Fathers look worse off when it comes to communicating with their children. Only 7% of boys and 4% of girls (aged 15 to 24) have been found to discuss "growing up" issues with their fathers in a recent youth survey. Mothers are equally bad when it comes to their sons, with only 6% of boys discussing "life" with them. However, girls (77%) speak more freely to their mothers.

The survey was carried out among nearly 51,000 married and unmarried young males and females from six states in India.

The survey found that school performance is the most common area of discussion between children and their parents. But topics like romantic relationships and reproduction (生育), are seldom discussed with either parent.

When it comes to reproductive issues, children keep silent in front of both their parents. The findings also suggest that parents control the social interactions (交往)of their children. Among young men, for example, 64% of those from Maharashtra and the southern states experience disapproval from both parents if friends of the opposite sex come home, compared to even higher numbers (71% to 80%) in the northern states.

The survey found that parents are most likely to disapprove of marriage for reasons of love for their

children, as reported by 84% of young men and 94% of young women. As for how parents react to a love marriage, differences are obvious for young men, with those from southern states less likely to experience disapproval than those from other states (67 to 78% versus 85 to 94%).
