What is a pub?
The word pub is short for public house. There are over 60,000 pubs in the UK(53,000 in England and Wales, 5,200 in Scotland and 1,600 in Northern Ireland). One of the oldest pubs, Fighting Cocks in St. Albans. Herts, is located in a building that dates back to the eleventh century.
Don’t ever try to ‘jump’ the invisible queue. Don’t call out to the bar staff, tap coins on the counter, snap your fingers, wave like a drowning swimmer, bang your hand on the counter, shout "service" or "barman" or wave money about. Do let the bar staff know you are waiting to be served by holding money or your empty glass in your hand. Don’t scowl, frown or glare at the bar staff, or make your impatience obvious by heavy sighing and angry muttering. Do adopt an expectant, hopeful, even slightly anxious facial expression. Don’t ring the bell. This is used by the publican or bar staff to signal ‘last orders’ and ‘time’.

Pub Culture in UK
If You Haven't Been To a Pub, You Haven't Been to Britain.
If someone truly wants to understand the local culture of Britain, the most effective way is step into those bars. British people like to tell foreigners - "If you haven't been to a pub, you haven't been to Britain". In fact it really like they said, the bar culture is absolutely essential for the UK as a part of social life.
Rule No. 2
It is customary for one or two people, not the whole group, to go up to the bar to buy drinks. there is no formal line-up
----the bar staff are skilled at knowing whose turn it is.
Pub Signs
The 'Red Lion' is probably the most common name for a pub and originates from the time of James I and VI of Scotland who came to the throne in 1603. James ordered that the heraldic red lion of Scotland be displayed on all buildings of importance - including pubs!
There are many types of beer available in pubs. Traditional British beer is called bitter苦啤酒, or ale浓啤酒, and is usually served at room temperature. As a result, the British are famous for their ‘warm beer’. If you prefer a cold beer, ask for lager. This beer is a light yellow in color whereas bitter is usually a darker brown. Another type of beer is stout黑啤酒 – you may have heard of Guinness, which is a type of stout. This is a cold ,black beer and takes a long time to pour, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait for it.
Groups of friends normally buy “rounds” of drinks, where the person whose turn it is will buy drinks for all the members of the group. It is sometimes difficult to get served when pubs are busy; People do not queue, but the bar staff will usually try and serve those who have been waiting the longest at the bar first. IF you spill a stranger’s drink by accident, it is good manners to offer to buy another drink.
All beers are served as pints (500ml) or halves. To order, you need to ask for a pint or half, and then name the beer. So, you could say ‘A pint of bitter, please.’ Another drink is cider苹果酒. This is like beer, but it is made from apples so it can taste sweet. Wine, red or white, is normally available in all pubs, as are spirits烈性 酒 such as whisky, gin金酒 or vodka伏特加 . These are served as singles (25ml) or doubles (50ml). It is not, however, necessary to drink alcohol. Nonalcoholic drinks are called soft drinks. You can have juice, lemonade or cola, among others.
