Abstract

This paper mainly analyses the causes and countermeasures for poor listening of non English majors. First, the author analyzes the causes from the perspectives of linguistic factors and non language factors, the factors may be about poor basic knowledge, psychological barrier, wrong selection of teaching materials, the lack of cultural background,etc..Then reasonable and feasible countermeasures for the improvement of English listening level of non English majors are proposed. Vocabulary accumulation and phonetics training are helpful for non English majors to strengthen their basis of language. The introduction of cultural background knowledge can reduce the reliance on mother tongue and help understand listening content, relevance theory,teaching strategies, learning strategies are conducive to the improvement of non English major students’listening proficiency.

With the informatization of social life and economic globalization,English is becoming more and more important. As one of the most important information carrier, English has been used in every field of human life. In China, English has become a required course in school. With the continuous reform in the English exam, the improvement of college students' English listening and speaking abilities have been the first priority in CET 4 and CET 6 exams. But most of non English majors in domestic universities in English, even though they may get high scores in English exams, poor English listening is a common phenomenon. The analysis of the causes of poor English listening among non English Majors can help propose feasible and reasonable countermeasures for the problem.

1.The causes of poor English listening among non English Majors

Poor English listening is a common phenomenon among non English majors, how to effectively enhance their English listening is an urgent problem to be resolved, but there are many factors affecting listening comprehension, including language and non language factors, language factors refer to those related to language, including vocabulary, pronunciation,grammar and so on. Non language factors refer to other factors apart from language, such as voice, vocabulary, grammar etc. The objective analysis of the causes of non English Majors' poor hearing can help propose reasonable and feasible countermeasures, and is conductive to the improvement of their English level.
