Definition: The Ivy League is a collegiate athletic conference ( 大学体育协会)comprising sports teams from eight private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States. The conference name is also commonly used to refer to those eight schools as a group. Connotations(内涵) The term Ivy League has connotations of : academic excellence(学业优异), selectivity in admissions(入学条件苛刻), and social elitism(社会精英主义).

Historical and social background When the war ended in 1945, millions of veterans returned home and were forced to reintegrate into civilian life. To help this process, Congress passed the G.I.
