The Georgians were a group of typical poets whose works are included in Sir Edward Marsh’s Georgians Anthologies. They were published mainly between 1910 and 1920.
Virginia Woolf singled out three novelists (Arnold Bennett, John Galsworthy, H.G. Wells) of the first years of the 20th century for analysis and branded them as “Edwardians” in her famous essay , “Modern Fiction”. Virginia Woolf (1882--1941)

Showing and telling
• Authors, its said, should totally efface themselves in order to write “objectively”, “impersonally”, or “dramatically”. • Such judgments, however, privilege a modern artistic limitation suited to particular novelistic effects, and decry an alternative method of characterization which a number of novelists have employed to produce masterpieces.
The Historical Background
◆ When Queen Victoria died in 1901,an era was formally over.
Then the empire was declining. The new century began with particular set of problems. ◆ Charles Darwin put forward to the crisis of faith in his The origin of Species. ◆ The German philosopher Nietzsche had declared the death of God . ◆ Bertrand Russell had advanced a kind of despairing courage in his famous A Free Man’s Worship. ◆ Sigmund Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams contributed in the forthcoming artistic and literary experimentation.
