4.Beowulf’s victory in death, fifty years later over the fire dragon.
Beowulf is one of ancient England’s heroes.
Features of Beowulf:
• His acts being seven ages.他的表演有七个时期。起初是婴儿,
• At first the infant, 他的表演有七个时期。起初是婴儿,
• Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. 在妈妈怀里又哭又 吐;
• Then the whining school-boy, with his satchel, 然后是哭哭 啼啼的学童,背了书包,

e.g. Ring-giver -------king hearth-companions------attendant warriors swan’s bath or whale’s road for sea sea-wood -------ship

Julius Caesar
• 2.Britain became a Roman province till the beginning of the fifth century
• 3.The Roman occupation lasted for about 400 years.
4. In 410A.D., as the Germanic races attacked and overran the Roman Empire, the Roman garrisons in Britain withdrew.----the end of the Roman occupation.
Wiglaf: a Geat warrior, one of Beowulf’s select band and the only one to help him in his final fight with the dragon.

Figures of speech
Stars shine brightly in the sky. Stars twinkle like diamonds.
Imperialism appears to be strong but inwardly it is weak. Imperialism is a paper tiger.
• the epic story of the hero Beowulf, who fights the demonic monster Grendel.
• Epic : A long narrative poem telling about the deeds of a great hero and reflecting the values of the society from which it originated.
Grendel: man-eating monster who lives at the bottom of a foul mere, or mountain lake.
Grendel’s mother: avenge her son’s death
Dragon: giant fire-breathing serpent whom Beowulf fights in Part Two of the epic.
1. Alliteration: the repetition of consonant sounds in words close together.

Each figure has its own form and characteristics and its own way of achieving effect. Sometimes two or more figures can be used together for greater impact.
