Winery profile - Weingut Johann F. Ohler
Wine is our passion!
Our leading principle is always the respect for the soil on which our vines are growing – by pairing the right grape variety with the ideal soil we produce wines that reflect the character of soil and vine.
Every year we utilize all our experience and highest expectations to reach optimum quality for our wines.
The foundation of making a good wine is already laid in the vineyard. The careful treatment of vines and soil as well as the manual pruning are a necessary precondition to achieve fully ripe and healthy grapes.
We also consequently limit our yield to rich the high quality of wine we deliver. We purposefully reduced our yield before harvest to reach the highest possible quality.
All of our grapes are even nowadays harvested by hand without exception, because this is the only way to guarantee a thorough selection of the grapes.Wine is our tradition
In 1758 Johann Michael Ohler began the winemaking tradition in the Ohler family in the village of Gimmeldingen in the heart of the German Palatinate. His son Michael continued it.
His son Georg also a cooper started to also make and sell wooden barrels from 1890. Both businesses were continued by his son Johann Friedrich (who’s name is still the name of our winery today). He began to sell bottled wine under his own brand around 1920.
The barrel making business ceased in1962 and the business continued as professional winery under Ohler’s son Reinhard.
Since 1997 his daughter Sabine Ohler-Jost is leading the winery Johann F. Ohler together with her father Reinhard Ohler.
In 2007 Reinhard Ohler retired because of his age. Sabine Ohler-Jost and her husband Dr. Arnim Jost decided to take over and further improve the quality. Reinhard Ohler is still consulting with them and they also grateful to have so many experienced hands in the vineyards and the
cellar.
Winery profile - EXZELLENZ
The Story
EXZELLENZ wine began when Lisa Dieterichs from Ellenz was elected to be the wine queen of the Mosel region in 2014. The profuse delight for her achievement set the stepping-stones to the creation of a joint idea - the idea to produce a wine consisting of the combined samples of the best wines found in the cellars. A wine, which would present itself with special excellence and quality, which would gracefully accompany the duties of the wine queen as well as portray the connection Lisa has to her hometown Ellenz, a village mapped out amidst Germany’s finest wine region. Thus, the steep-slope vineyards set the stage for this exquisite wine; the Riesling – representative wine sort of the Mosel – carries the role of the protagonist.
The three wine masters Arno Fuhrmann, Thomas Basten and Markus Fuhrmann stand together for a clear affirmation to their region and have the determined goal to gift the Riesling of Ellenz with a special significance amongst the wines.
In order to put such an idea into practice, a great amount of enthusiasm, excitement and commitment is required. Based on these skills of m u t u a l a p p r e c i a t i o n a n d a h o s p i t a b l e collaboration, the EXZELLENZ initiative rose and prospered.The Wine
The EXZELLENZ initiative’s aspiration is to produce a high-quality wine in limited edition, which gracefully carries Mosel-typical characteristics.
For the very first wine, an exclusive cuvee labelled EXZELLENZ Nr. 1, a dry Riesling, only selected steep-slope vineyard Riesling wines were chosen and carefully manufactured into a cuvee.
The purpose was to create an elegant yet fruity Riesling whose mineral notes disclose its place of origin.
In the future, selected grapes from the best locations will be harvested in the fall and gently manufactured into further
EXZELLENZ wine sequels.
