天津地区的人类活动已有上万年的历史。新石器时代的天津文化至少具有两大特点它是北方文化的重要组成部分，而北方文化是目前已知中国文明中最早成熟、发达起来的一种文化；他是不同文化交汇的产物。

夏、商时期，天津地区的人类文明主要是土著文化。从西周开始，外来的燕国文化逐渐融合土著文明和自北方传入的其他文化。与此同时，天津平原地区逐渐成陆，这一地区的人文历史从一开始就与自然环境的变迁相互影响。经过几百年的发展，到春秋战国时期，燕国文化已从山地走向平原，覆盖了大部分天津地区。

The human activity in Tianjin area has thousands of years of history. Tianjin’s culture in Neolithic has at least two features: it is an important part of the northern culture which is the most mature and developed civilization of the present known Chinese civilization; it is the production of the mixture of different cultures.

In Xia, Shang period, the human civilization of Tianjin region is mainly indigenous cultures. From the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty, foreign culture of Yan gradually integrate indigenous civilization and other cultures from northern incoming. Meanwhile, Tianjin plains gradually changed into the land, human history in this region kept interacting with the change of natural environment from the beginning. After several hundreds years of development, to the Spring and Autumn Period, Yan culture went from the mountains to the plains, covering most of the Tianjin area.
