1.suppose vi. & vt. 表示“猜想;认为;设想”,作及物动词时其后可跟从句。

2. bored adj. (对某人/某物)厌倦的;烦闷的。
常构成词组bored with sb. / sth., bored with doing sth.。
[例句]I am never bored with his stories. 我从未对他的故事感到厌烦。
The children quickly got bored with staying indoors. 孩子们在屋子里很快就待不住了。
[拓展]
在课本第9页中出现了get bored 这种结构,意思是“厌倦”。
类似短语还有get excited“兴奋”, get relaxed “放松”等。
[辨析]bored 和boring
bored表示“(某人)对……感到厌倦”;boring表示“(某人/某物)令人感到厌倦的”。
[例句]She’s bored with doing the same thing every day.她对每天都做一样的事情感到厌倦。
He’s such a boring man! 他就是这么一个惹人烦的人!

3. go off (闹钟)响;(枪)开响; 爆炸
[例句] The alarm clock went off at six o’clock and woke me. 闹钟六点钟响了,把我吵醒了。
The gun went off by accident. 枪走火了。
The firecracker went off with a bang. 爆竹砰的一声爆炸了。
[拓展] go off well / badly进行得很顺利/糟糕

难句解析
1. ... I couldn’t live this lifestyle without a good wife. (P8)
英语句子中常可见到两个表示否定意义的词连用的情况,这一现象通常称为双重否定。
其形式上虽为否定,实则表示强烈的肯定语气, 即“否定+否定=肯定”。
本句采用的双重否定结构的形式是: cannot / could not + 行为动词+ without + 名词;without后还可接动词-ing形式。
如:
He couldn’t go out without his parents’ permission. 没有得到父母的允许他就不能出去。
You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs. 你不可能不打破鸡蛋就做成煎蛋卷。
2. I am always the first person to get to the office. (P9)
在本句中,不定式短语to get to the office作名词person的后置定语。
一般来说,如被修饰的名词前有序数词、形容词最高级或next, last, only, not a, the, very等限定词时,该名词往往用不定式作后置定语。
如:the first woman to set foot on the moon 第一个登上月球的女性
He was the last one to arrive. 他是最后一个到的。
3. When I get home at about ten, I look at some documents that I bring back from the office so that I can be ready for the next day’s work. I get to b ed around midnight when my wife and children are already asleep. (P9)
本段中出现了两个when。
第一个when作连词,引导时间状语从句,可译为“在……之后”。
如:I will discuss this problem with you when we meet. 当我们见面后,我将与你讨论这个问题。
第二个when作关系副词,引导定语从句, 修饰midnight,可译为“在那时”。
如:Sunday is the only day when I can relax. 星期日是我唯一可以休息的日子。
so that 引导目的状语从句。
如:I try to work hard so that I can make more money for them.
