The golden age of automatic telephony occurred after World WarⅡwhen the entire long-distance network was automated. The invention of the transistor spurred the application of electronics to switching systems and led to the deployment of the first electronic switching in the late 1950s. Satellite communication was first proposed in 1945 by the British science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke. Satellite communications became a reality with the launching of the Russian satellite Sputnik (in 1957) and the American satellite Explorer (in 1958). The AT&T Telstar was the first experimental satellite capable of relaying television (TV) programs across the Atlantic Ocean. It was launched from Cape Canaveral(now Cape Kennedy)on July 1962. In contrast with the Echo series, the TelstarⅠactive communications satellite launched in 1962 carried receiving and transmitting equipment. It was an active participant in the reception-transmission process. As the satellite received a signal from a ground or earth station, a communications complex that transmitted and/or received satellite signals, it relayed its own signal to earth.[1] Telstar also paved the way for today’s communications spacecraft since it created the world’s first international satellite television link.

During the span of years that separates TelstarⅠfrom today’ satellites, there have been a number of improvements. For example, spacecraft such as Telstar and Echo were placed in low earth orbits. In this type of orbital position, a satellite traveled at such a great rate of speed that it was visible, and hence usable, to an individual ground station for only a limited period of time each day. The satellite appeared from below the horizon, raced across the sky, and then disappeared below the opposite horizon.

What is DSP? DSP, or Digital Signal Processing, as the term suggests, is the processing of signals by digital means. A signal in this context can mean a number of different things. Historically the origins of signal processing are in electrical engineering, and a signal here means an electrical signal carried by a wire or telephone line, or perhaps by a radio wave. More generally, however, a signal is a stream of information representing anything from stock prices to data from a remote-sensing satellite.

Signals commonly need to be processed in a variety of ways. For example, the output signal from a transducer may well be contaminated with unwanted electrical“noise”. The electrodes attached to a patient’s chest when an ECG is taken measure tiny electrical voltage changes due to the activity of the heart and other muscles. The signal is often strongly affected by “mains pickup”due to electrical interference from the mains supply.
