NPI-16(Narcissistic personality Inventory)共有16个项目，简称NPI一16。且是单因素结构量表。NPI是一个采用二择一的强迫选择形式（是或否）的自评问卷，内容涉及自我评价、行为方式，如“我认为我是一个普通的人”、“我不喜欢炫耀自己”等。选择属于自恋项目的条目则计一分，NPI的全量表分数代表自恋的显性维度，得分范围是从0到16，分数越高显性自恋水平越高。

虽然NPI-40包括了自恋的不同方面，但它太长太耗时，Ames（2006）从NPI-40的项目出发，编制并验证了一个更短的、单维度的测验NPI-16。Ames曾报告该量表的内部一致性为0.72，重测信度为0.85。
