Shift System
Found on the upper right hand side at the back of the transmission, it houses the range piston. The range switch is closed in LO and turns on a light.

Synchronizer - How does it work?
•Synchronizer generates heat by rubbing against the intended gear cup •The rubbing causes “cup torque” •Cup torque “sets the block” •Cup torque decreases as speeds become closer (synchronized) •The driver pushes on the shift knob…causes force on the synchronizer

Air Filter/Regulator and Hoses:
The filter/regulator assembly filters the vehicle supply air and regulates the pressure to 4.10– 4.40 BAR .

Shift Knob and Remote Shift Control :
The RTS(O) uses a standard gear shift lever with no air or electric controls. The gear shift lever is connected through linkage to a Remote Shift Control on the transmission. The Remote Shift Control actuates the Range Shuttle Valve for a range shift.

Function of synchronizer: synchronizes or matches the output speed of the transmission and the speed of the gear being shifted into. (changes rotational speed of the intended gear - which includes the rotating part of the vehicles master clutch)

In LO range air flows from the Air Filter/Regulator to the Range Shuttle Valve and then to the Range Valve, which pushes the piston and shift fork rearward.

The transmission can be thought of as 2 separate “transmissions” combined into one unit.The first “transmission” or front section contains 6 gear sets which are shifted with the gear shift lever. The second “transmission” called the auxiliary section has two gear sets that are air shifted.

Synchronizer - How does it work?
•Eventually, the shift knob force is greater than the “blocking force” •Engagement occurs •Low force synchronizers have additional boosted feature machined into the M/S to assist with over coming the blocking force, therefore reducing amount of knob force required to synchronize the gear being engaged
