Insufficient Understanding of the Context
Context, in dictionary defined as “the parts of something written or spoken that immediately proceed and follow a word or passage and clarify its meaning”, can actually be extended in meaning to refer to the scope of the whole paragraph or passage, or even the background circumstance in which certain words or phrases stand. Sports news has a writing style with its own unique language system. The usage of many language units, including words, phrases, expressions and so on, poses great difference from that of the exactly same ones in other types of writing. Without sufficient understanding of the whole news article and some other background information, translators are very likely to associate certain words or expressions with incorrect meanings.
