It is my honor to offer a toast to our guests from Mexico. Mr. President and Mrs. Fox, on behalf of the American people, Laura and I welcome you to the United States. This is not only a state dinner; it is like a family gathering. The most important ties between your country and mine, Mr. President, go beyond economics and politics and geography. They are the ties of heritage, culture and family. This is true for millions of Mexican and American families, including my own. We have before us a great prospect, an era of prosperity in an atmosphere of liberty. Our cooperation in broad and unprecedented; our sense of trust is growing.
Today, we celebrate not only the 226th birthday of the United States of America, but also the cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity that makes us Americans. We are a complicated, often conflicted, but always dynamic country. A Chinese scholar once said: “America is a great nation because it has the three T’s: Vitality, ingenuity, and creativity.” These Three T’s has their roots in the immigrant experience. With this in mind, I sincerely welcome you today, our friends from China, our friends from all over the world. Please share in our Celebration. Men and women from each of your countries made America what it is today. Please join me in toasting the independence of the United States of America, the diversity that is our root strength, and our friendship with China.
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
This year, the world has witnessed two major events in China: the change of state leadership and the combat against SARS. We rejoiced early this year as our new state leaders were inaugurated. No sooner had they taken office than SARS broke out. With determination, our leaders mobilized the whole nation to fight an arduous and soul-stirring battle against the disease, winning a significant battle at last. In the midst of this change, working from the solid foundation laid in the past decade, our Central leadership has taken us to even greater heights. The economy has experienced rapid and healthy growth and is sustaining its momentum. Building a well-off society for about 1.3billion people is an impressive landmark in the history of the Chinese nation. Our pride and joy in this accomplishment is overwhelming.
Mr. President,
On behalf of all my colleagues present here, I wish to thank you for the incomparable hospitality for which the Chinese people are justly famous throughout the world. I particularly want to pay tribute, not only to those who prepared the
