Characteristics of Bernard Shaw's plays
1.Structurally and thematically, Shaw followed the great traditions of realism [’ri:əlɪzəm].(现实主义) 2.To portray[pɔ:’treɪ](描绘)his characters, he employed contrast antithesis [æn’tɪθəsɪs](对立).His characters are the representative of ideas that alter [’ɔ:ltə(r)] (改变)during the play. 3.Much of his drama is constructed by employing inversion.(倒置) 4.The plot of his plays advanced not by action but by dialogues like comedies of manners.(风格手法)

Pygmalion
Pygmalion [piɡ’meiljən] 卖花女(1912) was Bernard Shaw's most famous comedy, which was not accepted and welcomed by the publicity until it was filmed. It tells the story of Henry Higgins亨利·希金斯, a professor of phonetics [fə'netɪks]语音学, who makes a bet[bet]打赌 with his friend Colonel Pickering皮克林上校, that he can successfully pass off a Cockney[‘kɒkni] 伦敦东区土话的 flower girl, Eliza Doolittle伊丽莎·杜利特尔, as a refined[rɪ‘faɪnd] 举止优雅的 society lady by teaching her how to speak with an upper class accent[’æksent]重音 and training her in etiquette [‘etɪket] 礼节.
