A
SAN FRANCISCO- Only 21 percent of workers worldwide
are“engaged"-that's the word used to describe workers who are
ready to expend some extra effort at work-while 38 percent are disengaged, according toa new survey.
“Engagement is not satisfaction or happiness, but the degree
to which workers connect to the company emotionally, and the
degree to which workers are aware of what they need to do to add
value and are willing to take that action," said Julie Gebauer, a managing director of Towers Perrin, a consulting firm, which surveyed almost 90,000 workers in 19 countries.
¨Happy employees don't necessarily create better financial
results, but there is a definite link between engagement and a company's financial performance," Gebauer said.
The survey found 21 percent of workers worldwide are
engaged, and another 41 percent are ”enrolled", which means
they're on the road to engagement.
More than 80 percent of the engaged employees say they
contribute to the quality of company products, services and
customer satisfaction, while only 40 percent of disengaged workers
agree.
Engagement helps retention(留置)too. About 50 percent of engaged employees say they have no plans to leave their company versus 15 percent of the disengaged.
“The fact that almost 80 percent of workers are disengaged is
likely costing companies money. " Gebauer said.
“The conc eption of engagement is really a financial issue," said Gebauer. …Organizations that have employees that are highly
engaged deliver better financial results than those that don't. "
In a separate study, Towers Perrin assessed data on 40 global companies over a three-year period, measuring employee engagement at a certain point and then looking at the companies' financial results over the following three years.
Companies with highly motivated workers enjoyed a 3. 7
percent increase in profits, while companies with a lower level of worker commitment saw a decrease in profits slightly.
What makes for an engaged employee? It's not necessarily
pay. While the level of pay is important, it's not among the top 10 drivers of engagement. Rather than only using the pay, companies should survey their work force, much as they might study their customers, to assess what employees are seeking.
21. The underlined word “ienrolled" in Paragraph 4 means .
A. engaged
B. disengaged
C. over-engaged
D. not yet but to be engaged
22. According to the text, among 500 disengaged employees, how many would probably have the intention of leaving their company?
A. 50.
B. 75.
C. 250.
D. 425.
23. What would probably be talked about following the last paragraph?
A. The top ten drivers of engagement.
B. The reason to encourage engagement.
C. The importance of the pay level in engagement.
D. The survey of work force in a company.

Individuality is the particular character, or aggregate (total) of qualities that distinguishes one person or thing from others. Many artists late in the last century were in search of a means to express their individuality. Modern dance was one of the ways some of these people sought to free their creative spirit. At the beginning there was no exacting technique, no foundation from which to build. In later years, trial, error and genius founded the techniques and the principles of the movement. Eventually, innovators (改革者) even drew from what they considered the dread ballet, but first they had to get rid of all that was academic so that the new could be discovered. The beginnings of modern dance were happening before Isadora Duncan, but she was the first person to bring the new dance to general audiences and see it accepted and acclaimed Her search for a natural movement form sent her to nature.
She believed movement should be as natural as the swaying of the trees and the rolling waves of the sea, and should be in harmony with the movements of the Earth. Her great contributions are in three areas.
First, she began the expansion of the kinds of movement that could be used in dance. Before Duncan danced, ballet was the only type of dance performed in concert. In the ballet the feet and legs were emphasized, with virtuosity (高超技巧) shown by complex, codified positions and movements. Duncan performed dance by using her body in the freest possible way. Her dance stemmed from her soul and spirit. She was one of the pioneers who broke tradition
so others might be able to develop the art.
Her second contribution lies in dance costume. She rejected
ballet shoes and stiff costumes. These were replaced with flowing Grecian (希腊式的) tunes, bare feet, and unbound hair. She believed in the natural body being allowed to move freely, and her
dress displayed this idea.
Her third contribution was in the use of music. In her performances she used the symphonies of great masters including Beethoven and Wagner, which was not the usual custom.
She was as exciting and eccentric (怪异) in her personal life as in her dance.
24. According to the passage, what did nature represent to Isadora
Duncan ?

I had worried myself sick over Simon's mother coming to see
me. I was a new teacher, and I gave an honest account of the students' work. In Simon's case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn't read his own handwriting. But he was a bright student.
He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his abilities.
So when Simon's mother entered the room, my palms (乎掌)L-) were sweating. I was completely unprepared for her kisses on both my cheeks. “Icame to thank you," she said, surprising me beyond speech. Because of me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he loved me, he had begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had recently spent an afternoon at a friend's house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the self-respect I had developed in her son. She kissed me again and left.
I sat, stunned, for about half an hour, wondering what had
just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without even knowing it? What I finally came to remember was one day, several months before, when some students were giving reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke quietly, and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon's the expert on this. He is the only one you have to convince, and he can't hear you in the back of the room. " That was it. From that day on. Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, smiled more, and became happy. And it was all because he happened to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed praise was the one who took the last seat that day.
It taught me the most valuable lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I'm thankful that it came early and positively.
A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

writer felt .

A. Because she worried about her son's poor work.
B. Because she wanted to show her gratitude to the teacher.
C. Because Simon asked her to do so.
D. Because she wanted to know her son's performance in the school.
30. What the teacher said in paragraph 3 is intended to .
A. encourage Jeanne to speak louder
B. encourage Simon to work hard
C. ask Jeanne to convince Simon
D. tell the students that Simon was expert on that
31. The purpose of the passage is to .
A. tell the story of Simon
B. tell teachers how to be kind to students
C. advise the readers to be kind to others
D. share a valuable lesson with readers

Many areas of cropland in Bangladesh are becoming unfit for farming. The land is becoming salty. It is a big problem for the
small country which has more than 155 million people because
growing crops is the most common way Bangladeshis support themselves.
Farmers in the country are learning to grow vegetables in
so-called “vertical gardens. " The soil in these gardens is better
because heavy rains have removed much of the salt. Shobitha
Debna is a 35-year-old farmer in the village Chandipur is able to
grow hundreds of kilograms of vegetables each season in her small garden.
This kind of farming is new in Chandipur. But it may spread across the country.
Most of Bangladesh is at or below sea level. Rising seawaters linked to climate change has severely affected the country. High water from storms in coastal areas also add salt to soil. High salt content makes crops less productive. The salty sea water flows into rivers, which then flood Chandipur and other villages. Vegetable crops fail. For three years now, hundreds of villagers have grown crops in vertical gardens.
From July to October, about l. 5 meters of rain falls in Bangladesh. The seasonal rains remove salt from the soil. At the
end of the rainy season, villagers collect the cleaned soil and place
it in large containers. They use that soil to grow vegetables.
WorldFish Center, a non-profit International group has trained about 200 villagers in southwestern Bangladesh to make vertical gardens. Over the next two years, the center will train about 5,000 people. A vertical garden is easy to make. Villagers fill containers
with good soil and natural fertilizers. They put the containers on bricks so they are off the ground. They add pieces of the bricks to
the soil to help water flow and drain.
Villagers also grow vegetables in containers made from large, thin pieces of plastic supported by bamboo. This is called “vertical tower" which can produce more than 100 kilograms of vegetables each.
32. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The heavy rain makes the soil salty.
B. The salty water from the sea makes the sold salty.
C. Villagers uses bricks to contain good soil.
D. WorldFish Center has already trained 200 villagers in to
make vertical garden.
33. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Living conditions in Bangladesh is not easy.
B. Villagers put containers on bricks to make them off the
ground.
C. Villagers are trying to produce vegetables that can grow in
salty soil.
D. People in village CHandipur live a happier life than people
other part of Bangladesh.
