Self Reflection
Much has been learned through Doctor Willy’s four speeches. He helps us to realize what the real purpose of learning English is. It is understand that we are expected to be both a learner and a user of English. If we merely learn English but do not use it at all, we must make things wrong. In general, he shows us the right way to learn English better.
In the beginning, I felt a little frustrated, since the teaching plan suggested ten ways to be taught while he in fact finished seven. A Chinese saying occurs to me at that time which means having a good beginning but a bad end in doing something. But soon this thought was gone. Since the speech was so wonderful, why should I require so much? What’s more, seven is absolutely enough. Being aware of a theory is one thing but putting it into use is another thing. What puzzled me was how to put them into practical use. I couldn’t help imagining what a big progress I could have made! A better outcome was totally ahead of me.
The second day surprised me because it was the first time that I had heard the word-global English. I had expected him to compare British English and American English and then tell us which one is our choice. But the concept of global English offers me a more comprehensive understanding of English. English has come to almost every country and become an international language in real sense. Hopefully, I was blessed with a deeper understanding of English as a tool for interpersonal communication. The obligation of we English majors is to learnedly master it and consciously employ it in order not to fail our role as an over-cultural ambassador. I was deeply convinced that Dr. Willy is a guardian of English and that he feels obliged to advocate English learning.
When it comes to the thi rd day, I was better aware of modern technology’s great help in offering us with abundant and comprehensive material sources. Although I had known that modern technology plays a vital part in learning English, I had rarely used it for English improvement. This speech reminded me of its right function instead of merely using it for entertainment.
And the last speech brought a much bigger horizon. We got to learn some
essential skills required in modern society under Dr. Willy’s instruction. It helped to place English in a proper position in the skill list. We struggled out of English learning and position English from a higher lever with a bigger horizon. It is important to know that we are not really qualified for a job if we are skilful only in English. English is an important thing but not the only important thing.
There is no doubt that Dr. Willy’s speeches have really helped a lot. As an international language, English has become more and more commonly used and we are doomed not to escape from it. When one of my teachers talked about the Babel Tower in class, I thought a lot. It is known that God finally destroyed this tower because he saw the mortal were so powerful that they could even build a tower touching the heaven. Soon or later, mortal people will overshadow God. Lord God in the bible eventually separated the mortal people and gave them different languages in the hope that their communication will become impossible and their great power can be restrained. But he may never imagine man’s power is so horrible. They managed to break the shackle of various languages and finally produce this more and more commonly used language, which is enough to be called a global language. Really, people are able to build another Babel Tower again, if English can be regarded as the vivid demonstration of people’s power. And here comes a question. Since Babel Tower was destroyed by Lord God, is it possible that English will be ruined by something? Of course I don’t believe in God at all, but we know that things always come to their end. Perhaps a better understanding of English development outcome will work. If we know a thing will boom, we must be confident to learn it, to master it, and to use it. But if we know this thing will perish at last, who can enjoy learning a dying thing? And I do know in person English is in its booming period.
