Lesson19 A very dear cat Kidnappers are rarely interested in Animals, but they recently took considerable interest in Mrs Eleanor Ramsay's cat. Mrs Eleanor Ramsay, a very wealthy old lady, has shared a flat with her cat, Rastus, for a great many years. Rastus leads an orderly life. He usually takes a short walk in the evenings and is always home by seven o'clock. One evening, however, he failed to arrive. Mrs Ramsay got very worried. She looked everywhere for him but could not find him.Three day after Rastus' disappearance, Mrs Ramsay received an anonymous letter. The writer stated that Rastus was in safe hands and would be returned immediately if Mrs Ramsay paid a ransom of &1000. Mrs Ramsay was instructed to place the money in a cardboard box and to leave it outside her door. At first, she decided to go to the police, but fearing that she would never see Rastus again --the letter had made that quite clear--she changed her mind. She drew &1000 from her bank and followed the kidnapper's instructions. The next morning, the box had disappeared but Mrs Ramsay was sure that the kidnapper would keep his word. Sure enough, Rastus arrived punctually at seven o'clock that evening. He looked very well, though he was rather thirsty, for he drank half a bottle of milk. 小王子21章英文版

小王子21章英文版The Little Prince: A Timeless Tale of Wisdom and WonderIn a vast and mysterious universe, where the stars twinkle like diamonds in the night sky, there lived a young prince from a distant planet. This enchanting character, known as the Little Prince, has captured the hearts and imaginations of countless readers around the world. His story, originally penned by the French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, has been translated into numerous languages and has become a beloved classic of literature. The Little Prince's journey begins when he crashes his small spacecraft on the Sahara Desert, where he encounters a stranded pilot. Intrigued by the prince's curious and thoughtful nature, the pilot listens as the young boy recounts the tale of his adventures across the cosmos. Through these encounters, the Little Prince shares profound insights about the human condition, the importance of relationships, and the true meaning of life. One of the most captivating aspects of the Little Prince's story is his encounter with the rose, a delicate and beautiful flower that he had tended to on his home planet. The rose, with its fragile petals anddemanding nature, represents the complexities of human relationships and the need for love, care, and understanding. The Little Prince's devotion to his rose, despite her flaws, is a testament to the power of unconditional love and the value of cherishing those close to us.As the Little Prince continues his journey, he meets a series of eccentric characters, each representing a different aspect of the human experience. From the vain and self-absorbed businessman to the lonely and isolated king, these encounters serve to highlight the Little Prince's unique perspective and his ability to see the world through a lens of innocence and wonder. One of the most poignant moments in the story occurs when the Little Prince encounters a fox, who teaches him the importance of taming and establishing meaningful connections. The fox explains that true friendship and love require time, patience, and the willingness to be vulnerable. This lesson, so simply and beautifully conveyed, resonates deeply with readers, reminding us of the profound value of human relationships and the need to invest in those we hold dear.Throughout the narrative, the Little Prince's interactions with the various characters he encounters serve to challenge the reader's preconceived notions about the world. His unwavering curiosity, hischildlike innocence, and his ability to see the world through a lens of wonder and imagination inspire us to reconsider our own perspectives and to embrace the beauty and complexity of life. The enduring appeal of The Little Prince lies in its timeless themes and its ability to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. Whether you are a child discovering the story for the first time or an adult revisiting its timeless wisdom, the tale of the Little Prince offers a profound and universal message about the importance of human connection, the power of imagination, and the enduring beauty of the world around us.As the pilot's encounter with the Little Prince draws to a close, the reader is left with a sense of wonder and a renewed appreciation for the simple yet profound truths that the young prince has imparted. The story's poignant conclusion, with its bittersweet yet hopeful tone, serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity and loss, the human spirit can find solace and strength in the connections we forge and the memories we cherish. In the end, The Little Prince stands as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the ability of literature to touch the hearts and minds of readers across generations and cultures. Its timeless message of love, friendship, and the importance of seeing the world through the eyes of a child continues to resonate with readersaround the world, inspiring them to embrace their own sense of wonder and to cherish the relationships and experiences that make life truly meaningful.。

新概念英语第三册第21课:Daniel MendozaLesson 21 Daniel Mendoza丹尼尔门多萨Listen to the tape then answer the question below.听录音,然后答复以下问题。

How many unsuccessful attempts did Mendoza make before becoming Champion of all EnglandBoxing matches were very popular in England two hundred years ago. In those days, boxers fought with bare fists for prize money. Because of this, they were known as prizefighters . However, boxing was very crude, for these were no rules and a prizefighter could be seriously injured or even killed during a match. One of the most colourful figures in boxing history was Daniel Mendoza, who was born in 1764. The use of gloves was not introduced until 1860, when the Marquis of Queensberry drew up the first set of rules. Though he was technically a prizefighter, Mendoza did much to change crude prizefighting into a sport, for he brought science to the game. In this day, Mendoza enjoyed tremendous popularity. He was adored by rich and poor alike.Mendoza rose to fame swiftly after a boxing match when he was only fourteen years old. This attracted the attention of Richard Humphries who was then the most eminent boxer in England. He offered to train Mendoza and his young pupil was quick to learn. In fact, Mendoza soon became so successful that Humphries turned against him. The two menquarrelled bitterly and it was clear that the argument could only be settled by a fight. A match was held at Stilton, where both men fought for an hour. The public bet a great deal of money on Mendoza, but he was defeated. Mendoza met Humphries in the ring on a later occasion and he lost for a second time. It was not until his third match in 1790 that he finally beat Humphries and became Champion of England. Meanwhile, he founded a highly successful Academy and even Lord Byron became one of his pupils. He earned enormous sums of money and was paid as much as $100 for a single appear one of his pupils. He earned enormous sums of money and was paid as much as $100 for a single appearance. Despite this, he was so extravagant that he was always in debt. After he was defeated by a boxer called Gentleman Jackson, he was quickly forgotten. He was sent to prison for failing to pay his debts and died in poverty in 1836.参考译文两百年前,拳击比赛在英国非常盛行。
