Styles in Western art have changed many times because of the customs and faith of a people. During the Middle Ages , most artists showed religious themes. Coming next is the Renaissance when the artists concentrated more on realistic things and used a more humanistic attitude to life. By chance, oil paints were developed. In the late 19th century, Europe changed a lot. A social change resulted in the appearance of the impressionists, whose paintings were not detailed and considered absurd. But now they are accepted as the beginning of Modern Art. There are so many different styles of Western art that no one can know the future of painting styles.

VII. Discuss in groups

Discuss the characteristics of the paintings in different periods in your group.

After the discussion, one group describes the characteristics of the paintings using one or two words or sentences, and another group guess which period they belong to.

VIII. Homework

1. Find more information about paintings on the Internet in your spare time.

2. Which art style would you rather see in your home? Give your reasons.
