BBC News Item 2 政治:大选在即,布朗遭遇挑战Less than six months before a general election in Britain, the governing Labour Party isembroiled again in internal strife. Two former cabinet ministers have called for secret ballot ofmembers to decide whether the Prime Minister Gordon Brown should continue as party leader. Mr.Brown has called a general election by June this year. Our political correspondent Rob Watsonreports. The two former cabinet ministers Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt had stunned everyone atWestminster with their last-minute efforts to challenge Gordon Brown’s leadership. But DowningStreet and Labour Party officials have moved quickly to quash any revolts. Most importantly, current cabinet ministers have come out and backed the prime minister, orbiting some cases withlittle apparent enthusiasm. So the latest challenge looks likely to be short lift. Although manywithin the Labour Party doubt Mr. Brown’s leadership qualities, they also seem to think it wouldonly make things worse to get rid of him before the general election.BBC News Item 3 军事:英国核缩减计划The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is offering to scale back Britain’s nucleardeterrence if an international agreement is reached to cut the world’s nuclear arsenals. Mr. Brown isexpected to tell a special session of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday that he’ll bewilling to give up one of four royal navy submarines that carry Trident nuclear missiles. Here’s our defence correspondent Nick Childs.Gordon Brown is saying he’ll be ready to throw part of the trident force into the port in thecontext of a much bigger global disarmament deal. He said soin general terms before. This offerthough is more concrete. There is a growing sense that to avoid what some fear could be a suddencascade of new nuclear states, the established nuclear powers need to do more in terms ofdisarmament to keep the proliferation regime intact. The Prime Minister will hope his move will beseen as an important gesture. But the key to the process will be the actions of the big players, theUnited States and Russia.BBC News Item 4 军事:英国派军阿富汗The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to confirm that he is sending hundredsmore troops to Afghanistan, bringing the total number of British troops there to about 9,500. Our defensecorrespondent Caroline Wyatt reports. In his statement on Afghanistan, it’s believed Mr. Brown will say he’s agreed in principle tosend around 500 extra British troops to Helmand. The military advice says that extra forces areneeded to help maintain progress and dominate the ground more effectively to keep the Taliban outof key areas. However, there will be caveats. The Prime Minister will wantassurances frommilitary chiefs that the extra troops will be properly equipped. But he’ll also expect Britain’s NATOpartners to follow suit by offering more forces themselves. BBC news 2009-07-17BBC News with Mike Cooper. There was confusion at United States military court in Guantanamo Bay at a hearing in which five men accused of plotting the September 11th attacks were due to appear. All five including the alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed initially refused to attend the hearing. As Jonathan Beale reports. The hearing was meant to focus on whether two of the detainees Ramzi Bin al- Shibh and Mustafa al-Hawsawi are mentally competent to represent themselves in court. In a sign of a contempt with which they viewed these proceedings, one of the detainees threw a paper plane at his co-accused when the court once again went into recess.Columbia has extradited to the United States an alleged rebel leader accused of being the jailer of political hostages, among them the former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt. The man, Gerardo Aguilar Ramírez also known as Cesar, was arrested last year. From Bogotá, here is Jeremy Mcdermott.Cesar is now the unwilling guest of the US justice system, and is likely to spend the next 20 years in an American cell. Undercover soldiers persuaded him to hand over 15 hostages in his care, among them, Ingrid Betancourt. Not only did he surrender his hostages but he was persuaded to accompany the mission, climbing aboard a helicopter where he was quickly overpowered and placed under arrest. The United States Space Agency NASA has begun a series of events to mark the 40th anniversary of the lift-off of Apollo 11, the 1969 mission that put the first humans on the moon. Forty years ago, the Apollo 11 rocket blasted off from the launch pad here in Cape Canaveral and human history changed forever. A handful of Apollo astronauts have been taking questions from an eager audience here, and memories of those glory days have been recalled. But this is also a day that many are asking about the future. NASA's shuttle fleet will be retired next year. And there is talk of putting another man on the moon in the next few years. But for many, it's nothing compared to that day in July, 1969 when two men walked on the lunar surface. The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has again been forced to defend the government's provision of helicopters and troops in the current campaign in Afghanistan, where there's been a recent surge in the number of British troops killed. But Mr. Brown has insisted that sufficient helicopters were being deployed there.I'm Mike Cooper in London. BBC news 2013-02-19BBC News with Mario Haugage(inaudible)The French government has given a company accused of relabeling horsemeat as beef permission to resume some of its activities. The company Spanghero had its licence suspended last week after investigators found evidence that horsemeat from Romania had been relabelled there. From Paris, Hugh Schofield reports.Following a decision by the agriculture minister, Spanghero will now be allowed to resume its work preparing ready meals and cooked meats. This may sound odd given that it was in supermarket ready meals that the horsemeat was detected. But in fact Spanghero’s alleged role in this affair was not as a preparer of food but as a trader in food. It’s claimed that the company bought the horsemeat from a Cyprus-based middleman, relabelled it as beef and then sold it on. But Spanghero’s main activity has always been food processing. With 300 workers, it’s a major employer in a region hit hard by unemployment.Elsewhere in Europe food safety officials in the Netherlands have carried out raids of more than 100 slaughterhouses and processing plants to see if horsemeat is being passed off as beef. And supermarkets in Britain have agreed to update the government every three months on the results of random DNA tests carried out on beef to ensure it contains no other meat. The Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has returned home after cancer surgery in Cuba. He announced his return on the social media site Twitter with the words “Th ank you, my God. Thank you, my beloved people.” Venezuela’s Information Minister Ernesto Villegas confirmed the president’s arrival on Venezuelan national television.“He’s back. He’s back. He’s back. Bravo! Commander Chavez has returned. We are very happy to be able to share this very joyous news. Congratulations, Venezuela.”The European Union has decided to keep sanctions against Syria in place for another three months, but has modified the arms embargo to allow for more non-lethal and technical support to the opposition. Britain had been pressing for the embargo to be lifted so that more arms could reach the Syrian rebels. At least 13 people are reported to have been wounded in violence outside a mine in South Africa. The men, who included four guards, were injured by rubber bullets and machetes. Reports said the incident happened when scuffles broke out between members of rival trade unions of the mine which is run by Anglo American. Pumza Fihlani reports from South Africa. At least 13 mine workers have been injured at the Anglo American Platinum mine’s Siphumelele shaft in Rustenburg after security guards allegedly shot rubber bullets to disperse a crowd of feuding miners from rival unions. South African police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane told the BBC that four security guards also suffered machete wounds. The mine is a few kilometres away from the Lonmin mine where police shot and killed 34 striking miners last August. This is the World News from the BBCIn Tunisia, attempts to form a new government of technocrats have failed. The Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali is quoted as saying that another form of government is still a possibility. Mr Jebali has threatened to resign if his proposals were not accepted by the leader of his own Ennahda party. The French news agency says the prime minister shows no sign of standing down and he’s still seeking a compromise. The political crisis in Tunisia followed the assassination of a prominent opposition politician.Troops have been deployed to the three largest airports in Bolivia following a surprised move by the government to nationalise them. The airports are run by Sabsa, the subsidiary of a Spanish company which runs several other airports around the world. The Bolivian President Evo Morales accused Sabsa of failing to improve infrastructure and services. This is the third state take-over of a Spanish-run company in less than a year.A lawyer from London has been jailed for 10 years for arranging hundreds of bogus marriages. Tevfick Souleiman was found guilty of conspiracy to breach immigration law and of receiving the proceeds of crime. Richard Clark reports.Over eight years solicitor Tevfick Souleiman and three immigration advisers at his north London law firm arranged sham marriages for illegal immigrants of what the judge called an industrial scale. They flew in women from eastern European countries, paid them to marry men outside the EU who they hadn’t even met before the ceremony and then flew them home the following day. Each couple was also provided with a script of their supposed love story to help them hoodwink officials if questions were asked.A strike by journalists has disrupted news programmes across the domestic and international radio and TV networks of the BBC. Members of the National Union of Journalists have stayed away in protest of compulsory redundancies. The BBC says it’s trying to redeploy as many as possible of the 150 staff facing redundancy.1. resume n. 简历例句:That's hard to put on a resume.这可很难写在简历上。

His characters are not modified by the customs of particular places, unpractised by the rest of the world; by the peculiarities of studies or professions, which can operate but upon small numbers; or by the accidents of transient fashions or temporary opinions: they are the genuine progeny of common humanity, such as the world will always supply, and observation will always find. His persons act and speak by the influnce of those general passions and principles by which all minds are agitated, and the whole system of life is continued in motion. Jon Leyne reports.Hossein Rassam was the last and the most senior Iranian employee of the British embassy being held by the Iranian government. The authority has accused him of helping to stir up the protests over the disputed election, a charge strongly denied by Britain. Observers believe the real purposes may have been to scare off Iranians from working in Western embassies and so make it more difficult for the embassies to operate. According to his lawyer, Hossein Rassam was released on bail of around 100,000 dollars. He may still be charged with action against national security, though ofte the Iranian authorities do not bring cases to court but leave them open as a future threat.Differences have emerged between the Iraqi authorities and the American military over how their forces cooperate now that Iraq controls security in its towns and cities. The Iraqi Defense Ministry said there had been no joint patrols since US troops pulled out of urban area at the end of June. Gabriel Gatehouse reports.According to an agreement signed between the two sides, US forces are not allowed to enter Iraq’s towns and cities unless specifically requested to do so by the Iraqi authorities except in cases of self-defense. The spokesman said the military adhered to a strict interpretation of these new rules, but some in the American military appear to take a different view. The Washington Post newspaper quotes what it says is an email written by the commander of the US forces’ Baghdad division, saying that his troops would continue to engage in operations inside urban areas to avert or respond to threats whether or not they were supported by the Iraqis.Firefighters in western Canada are struggling to contain two wild fires which have forced theevacuation of about 17,000 people from their homes. Japanese Women wary to wed BBC

Japanese Women wary to wed BBC

Japan's women wary to wedIt is nearly 15 years since Japan's economy ground to a halt, triggering a period of introspection about the country's values and its place in the world. In the first of a special series, BBC News Online's Sarah Buckley reports on women's changing attitudes to marriage. Tuesday, 28 September 2004, 14:03 GMT 15:03 UKMulti-coloured collars, premium chews, and cat picture books line the shelves at a swanky emporium in Ebisu, upmarket Tokyo.Veronique is just one of a string of establishments catering for a boom in Japanese dog owners. But its success seems as much due to a rejection of marriage as a new-found love for the canine."There are lots of women who have dogs as their family or child," said Rie Shimozono, the shop's owner. "They carry the dog in a bag so that they are always spending time with it."Gazing through the window was Kazoko Endo, with Fukusuke, her daschund, in tow. She is typical of an increasing number of 30-something women in Japan - successful, single, and childless."Of course we will get married to someone," said Kazoko, referring to her and her dog. But the very fact that she was not even dating at 38 suggested it was not a priority.Twenty years ago, women like Ms Endo would have had a wedding ring on her finger and children at her feet. But changing expectations, both of relationships and careers, mean women across Japan, from school-leavers to members of the royal family, are grappling with a choice between traditional roles and modern freedoms. The dilemma left more than one in four Japanese women aged 30-34 still unmarried, in 2000.As a result women are having children much later, if at all. Japan's birth rate dipped to just 1.29 children per woman last year, one of the lowest in the developed world, from 1.54 in 1990.Hiroe Shibata, 35, who works for a multinational pharmaceutical company, said her priority was her career."I'm not against marriage. It's just not happening to me now," she said, pointing out that long working hours followed by evening school left her with no time to date. She said she loved children, but when asked if she worried about her biological clock, she replied: "If I have the time, then I'll have to think about it."No second best“Their husbands work long hours; child care is limited; baby sitters are expensive; and if women decide to work part-time, they are paid less than half that of a full-time worker ”Even women with less pressing commitments did not seem in a hurry to tie the knot.Yumiko Koshi, 33, was one of a number of women waiting to see pop idols Tokio last week. Bands originally marketed at teenagers are becoming popular with 30- and 40-something females unfettered by family life.Yumiko said she wanted to get married, but only if she "found a nice guy". She said she had a boyfriend, but did not see him as marriage material. "It's fun to play with him but I don't thinkhe's reliable enough as a husband. Sometimes he can't make decisions.""Maybe I might have a lonely old age, but I can't just marry somebody not so good and have a hard time."According to Sumiko Iwao, author of The Japanese Woman, many women no longer see marriage as an important goal."I guess they do not plan to stay single, they just don't meet with the kind of people they want to marry. They don't feel obsessed with being a housewife. If you find a good husband, that's fine, and if you don't, that's also fine."Japanese women tend to be very practical and very pragmatic. What are the benefits of getting married?"For most people in Japan, where unmarried parents are still rare, the main "benefit" is children. And that is the point at which modern freedoms clash headlong with traditional expectations.Hiroe Shibata explained: "If you get married, your parents expect you to have a baby. If you have a baby, it's going to be very difficult to manage your work and bring up children."No-one is more aware of this tension than Japan's Princess Masako. On entry to the Imperial family she has been forced to give up her high-flying diplomatic career to concentrate on bearing a male heir. Earlier this year she was diagnosed with a nervous disorder due to stress. Her unique role obviously brings its own strains. But many women are finding the sacrifice of hard-won economic success and freedom for childbirth tough."I think that being a mother reinforces the female role - once you have kids you have some responsibilities to be shared with your partner," said Hiroko Mizushima, a lawmaker specialising in gender equality for the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan. However, Ms Mizushima cited government research, from 1995, which suggested full-time working men spent 26 minutes each weekday on domestic chores, compared to 3 hours, 18 minutes by full-time working women. The data may now be outdated, but Ms Mizushima said the balance had not changed.Other disincentives are that their husbands work long hours, child care is limited; baby sitters are expensive; and if women decide to work part-time, they are paid less than half that of a full-time worker.FEMALE FACTSRyuko Ishikawa, a family psychiatrist, believes 30-something women are not prepared to "repeat their mothers' mistakes" in settling for the role of housewife. But she said many of her female clients' ambitions were not supported by their husbands. She referred to the Japanese saying 'deru kugi wa utareru' - the 'nail that sticks out will get hammered'. It is used to denote the person who upsets the social norm."Now, women are becoming 'deru kugi' - are sticking out. There's very few males who would say 'that's right, we have to support you.' Instead they (the women) are being hammered," said Dr Ishikawa. One of those women, caught up in the conflict between the present and the past, appears to be Princess Masako."I think Masako-san is a good example of the typical Japanese 'deru-kugi' - the capable woman. I don't think she's ill. I think she's normal," Dr Ishikawa said.。

BBC news 2011-07-31BBC News with Iain PurdonWith a deadline for resolving the United States debt crisis just three days away, there's intense debate in the Senate over a Democrat-backed plan to raise the nation's borrowing limit. The Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the proposal was, in his words, "the only game in town", and there will be a vote by midnight. From Washington, Paul Adams. An acrimonious standoff continues between the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and Democratic-controlled Senate with competing bills being passed or blocked. The room for compromise on raising the debt ceiling and cutting government spending clearly exists, but it'll require some deft congressional diplomacy and almost certainly the involvement of the White House to make sure it happens. But Washington is bracing itself for the possibility that it won't. The Treasury has been drawing up its emergency plans, working out what bills to stop paying and when. The fact that American soldiers in Afghanistan have started to ask their leaders whetherthey'll continue to be paid, which they will, is perhaps a measure of just how the sense of anxiety is spreading.A top American adviser on Iraq has accused the US military of glossing over an upsurge in violence just months before its troops are due to be withdrawn. The US Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, Stuart W Bowen Jr, said the killing of US soldiers and senior Iraqi figures as well as attacks in Baghdad had all risen, making Iraq more dangerous than it was a year ago. A BBC correspondent in the region says the report is in contrast to the usually upbeat assessments from the military.Meanwhile, the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has announced his country will go ahead with a plan to buy 36 F-16 fighter jets from the United States. Sebastian Usher reports.Iraq has blown hot and cold over a possible multibillion-dollar deal to buy F-16s from the US. The aim ostensibly is to protect Iraqi airspace and revive its enfeebled air force. Iraq put the original deal on hold in order to use the funds to buy basic food stuffs instead, but Iraq's coffers have apparently been boosted bysoaring oil prices since then. With US troops due to withdraw shortly, Mr Maliki has now revived the F-16 deal as part of Iraq's efforts to show it's moving towards military self-sufficiency.Afghan intelligence officials say they've arrested an army officer who's suspected of working for the Taliban. He's accused of helping plan future suicide bombings in Kabul. Here's Jill McGivering.Afghan intelligence sources named the army officer as Gul Mohammed but didn't reveal his rank. They say he was in contact with Taliban commanders, making arrangements for them to bring fighters into Kabul and to plan future attacks, including suicide bombings, on government targets there. One report suggests he was in charge of several road checkpoints around the capital, which were a key part of security defences. Officials say he was promised money by the Taliban in return for his help.World News from the BBCThe Turkish President Abdullah Gul has denied that there's any crisis in the country following the resignation of its four most senior commanders on Friday. He said one had considered resigning for a while and the other generals retired on the basis of age. There were reports that they'd stood down in protest at the trial of military officers.A United Nations report says there's increased instability and substance abuse in East Africa as a result of drug trafficking. It says the region is now a major transit route. With the details, here's Nkem Ifejika. The United Nations says it's concerned that East Africa be in use as a drugs trafficking route because the region doesn't have the resources to fight trafficking or addiction. As detection and enforcement have improved in West Africa, gangs there have changed tactics and are now going via the east to transport drugs, such as heroin, from Afghanistan to Europe. The UN report says this is most likely because of corruption, poverty and limited law enforcement capacity in the region.Judicial authorities in China have apologised for a warning thatwas given to lawyers about representing victims of last Saturday's train crash. Law firms were told that the case was highly sensitive and they must report immediately if contacted by injured passengers or families of the 40 known to have died. The judicial authorities in the eastern city of Wenzhou issued their apology after the statement was revealed on Internet chat sites. The qualifying draw for the 2014 football World Cup in Brazil is underway at a star-studded ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.
