•The five basic elements
The five-element theory, also called the five-phase or five-movement theory, holds that everything in the universe, including our health, is governed by five natural elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. The theory stresses the Chinese belief that human beings, both physically and mentally, are interwined with nature, which is fundamental to the understanding of TCM.

Basic Principles of TCM
TCM is based on the philosophical concept that the human body is a small universe with a set of complete and sophisticated colsely-related sub-systems. Those systems usually work balancely and harmoniously to maintain the normal function of the human body. There are also systems (much like immune system in modern concept) in human body to heal illness automatically. In case of any imbalance between those sub systems in human body, the healing system may lose power and the illness occurs.

Clinical diagnosis and treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine are mainly based on the yin-yang and five elements theories. These theories apply the phenomena and laws of nature to the study of the physiological activities and pathological changes of the human body and its interrelationships.
The concept Yin and Yang comes from an ancient philosophical concept. Chinese medicine used Yin and Yang to illustrate the complicated relationship between various things, such as the different parts of the human body and living things versus nature or society.

A cone of moxa or powered leaves of the mugwort is placed on a particular acupuncture point and set alight --aims to increase the amount of yang in the body. Moxibustion may be used by itself, but is most commonly used as an ancillary to acupuncture for “cold”, that is, chronic disease.
